This bill establishes a high school robotics participation grant program administered by the state commissioner of education to encourage science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education. The program will provide $5,000 grants to public and private high schools with robotics clubs or teams participating in robotics competitions. To be eligible, schools must form a partnership with a business, higher education institution, or technological school and submit applications by June 1st for the following academic year. Schools must also secure matching funds of at least 50% of the grant amount. Grant preference will be given first to Title I schools, then to schools that have not previously participated in robotics competitions, with funds used for competition registration, materials, travel costs, and related expenses. The department will establish a process to certify approved robotics leagues and organizations. The goal is to support STEM education by helping schools develop and participate in robotics programs, with a focus on providing opportunities to schools that might not otherwise have access to such competitive experiences.
