This bill establishes a temporary Childhood Obesity Commission under the state executive branch to study and evaluate various aspects of childhood obesity in Indiana. The commission will consist of 10 members, including representatives from state government (such as the chief medical officer, education secretary, and family services secretary), legislative members, a pediatrician specializing in childhood obesity, and a governor-appointed member. The commission will investigate topics including child care licensing standards related to nutrition and physical activity, state regulatory systems for nutrition requirements, potential health savings accounts for purchasing fruits and vegetables, Medicaid coverage for obesity-related treatments, school recess and physical education requirements, and other relevant issues. The commission is required to submit an annual report to the governor and general assembly by June 30, 2026, detailing its activities, findings, and legislative recommendations. Members will receive per diem compensation and expense reimbursement, and the commission will be staffed by the state department. The commission will operate until June 30, 2027, when it will automatically expire.
