This bill ensures that supplemental uninsured/underinsured motorists (UM/UIM) insurance coverage is automatically included in motor vehicle liability insurance policies at the same limits as the policy's bodily injury liability coverage. The bill requires insurers to notify policyholders that they will receive this coverage by default, with the option to decline or select lower coverage through a written or electronic waiver. Insurers must provide a form explaining UM/UIM coverage, which protects policyholders if they are injured in an accident with a negligent driver who has no insurance or insufficient insurance. The bill also extends the existing provisions related to this type of insurance coverage until June 30, 2029. If an insurance carrier fails to provide the required waiver form, the policy will be interpreted as including the maximum supplemental UM/UIM coverage equal to the liability limits, regardless of premiums paid. The changes will apply to new insurance policies, and those already issued, renewed, or amended after the bill's effective date, which is 90 days after it becomes law.
