This bill proposes a constitutional amendment to increase the terms of state senators and assembly members from two years to six years, and to impose term limits for these legislative positions. Starting in the year 2026, senators and assembly members will be elected to six-year terms, with a restriction that no person can serve more than three consecutive six-year terms in either the senate or assembly. The term limit calculation does not include partial terms served prior to being elected to a consecutive six-year term. The amendment would apply only to office terms beginning after the amendments are officially adopted, and the proposed changes must be referred to the first regular legislative session after the next general election and published three months before that election, in accordance with the state constitution's amendment process.
