This bill requires Alabama public schools to implement a violence prevention, conflict resolution, and mediation course for students before they enter high school, starting with the 2026-2027 school year. The mandatory instruction must cover seven key areas: responsible decision-making, causes and effects of school violence and harassment, consequences of violent behavior, causes of violent reactions, nonviolent conflict resolution techniques, the relationship between drugs/alcohol and violence, and the implementation of peer mediation programs. By June 30, 2026, the State Department of Education must prepare instructional materials and guidelines for local school boards, who will have flexibility in designing their specific curricula. The department will also be responsible for training teachers to deliver this instruction effectively. Additionally, the State Board of Education is required to adopt rules to implement these new educational requirements. The bill is set to become effective on October 1, 2025, ensuring schools have time to develop and prepare appropriate programs that aim to reduce school violence and promote peaceful conflict resolution among students.
