This bill expands a no-fare transportation program for police officers to include the New York City Transit Authority systems and the Metro-North Commuter Railroad Company, in addition to the existing Long Island Rail Road program. The legislation now covers current and retired police officers who possess a valid pistol permit and are employed by or retired from various law enforcement agencies, including the New York City Police Department, Nassau and Suffolk County agencies, state police, port authority, and other transit-related organizations. The bill requires registered officers to provide information about their working hours and expected transit routes, and mandates periodic re-registration and re-validation. Additionally, the bill grants retired police officers riding these transportation services the same powers and protections as peace officers, with their previous law enforcement training considered sufficient to meet peace officer training requirements. The new provisions aim to enhance commuter safety and provide transportation benefits to law enforcement personnel, with the act set to take effect 90 days after becoming law.
