This bill modifies Indiana's speed limit regulations by eliminating the lower speed limit for trucks on certain highways. Specifically, the bill increases the maximum speed limit for vehicles weighing over 26,000 pounds from 65 miles per hour to 70 miles per hour when those vehicles are traveling on interstate highways located outside urban areas with populations of at least 50,000 or on highways managed by the Indiana Finance Authority. The bill removes the previous distinction between speed limits for vehicles based on their gross weight and consolidates speed limit categories. It maintains existing speed limits for other types of roads, such as 30 miles per hour in urban districts, 65 miles per hour on specific highways like U.S. 20 and U.S. 31, and 60 miles per hour on certain multi-lane divided highways outside urban areas. The bill also includes a provision clarifying the speed limit in alleys at 15 miles per hour and establishes that violations of these speed limit regulations constitute a Class C infraction. The changes are set to take effect on July 1, 2025.
