This bill amends the New York State Penal Law to expand the definition of criminal impersonation in the first degree to include two new scenarios: impersonating utility company employees and delivery personnel. Specifically, the bill adds provisions that make it a criminal offense when a person pretends to be a utility company employee by expressing false authority, wearing unauthorized uniforms or insignia, and goes onto another person's property; or when someone impersonates a delivery person for packages, food, or beverages by similarly misrepresenting their identity and authority. These new provisions are added to the existing law which already criminalizes impersonating police officers, federal law enforcement, or licensed physicians with intent to induce reliance on that false identity and potentially commit a felony. The act would become effective 90 days after becoming law, and is classified as a class E felony, which typically involves less serious criminal offenses that still carry potential prison time. The bill aims to protect individuals and property from potential fraud or unauthorized access by people falsely claiming to be official representatives of companies or services.
