This bill establishes two new criminal offenses related to threatening or assaulting police officers and peace officers: menacing a police officer or peace officer in the first degree and menacing a police officer or peace officer in the second degree. First-degree menacing occurs when a person intentionally puts an on-duty officer in reasonable fear of physical injury by displaying a deadly weapon, and the person knows or should know the victim is a law enforcement officer. The bill also makes several conforming changes to the criminal procedure law and administrative codes, such as modifying provisions related to appearance tickets and listing these new offenses among other serious felonies. These changes aim to provide additional legal protections for police and peace officers by creating specific criminal charges for actions that threaten or disrespect them while performing their official duties.
