This bill modifies regulations for certified nurse midwives (CNMs) and licensed certified midwives (LCMs) in Virginia, expanding their ability to practice independently. Specifically, the bill allows CNMs and LCMs who have completed 1,000 hours of practice under a practice agreement to practice without that agreement, upon receiving an attestation from the physician or independent practice midwife they previously collaborated with. The bill introduces the term "independent practice midwife" to include licensed certified midwives or certified nurse midwives who have practiced independently for two years. Additionally, the bill permits CNMs and LCMs to enter into practice agreements with other CNMs or LCMs who are authorized to practice independently. The legislation also directs the Department of Health to update its definition of "organized medical staff" to explicitly include independent practice midwives alongside physicians and dentists. This change aims to provide more flexibility and autonomy for midwives in their medical practice, while maintaining standards of patient care and consultation with other healthcare providers.
