This bill directs the Commissioner of Health to establish a work group dedicated to studying microplastics (tiny plastic particles) in the Commonwealth's public drinking water. The work group will include representatives from waterworks owners and operators, private water companies, consumer advocacy groups, and other stakeholders as deemed appropriate by the Commissioner. The Office of Drinking Water will provide administrative support, and the work group's specific tasks include determining current microplastic levels in public drinking water, identifying contamination sources, evaluating existing reduction approaches from other states and federal regulations, and developing recommendations for minimizing microplastics in drinking water. The work group is required to submit a comprehensive report of its findings and recommendations to the Governor and specified legislative committee chairs by December 1, 2025, with the ultimate goal of understanding and addressing potential public health risks associated with microplastic contamination in drinking water.
