AI Summary
This bill expands legal definitions and penalties related to firearms possession for individuals convicted of domestic violence offenses. Specifically, the bill adds a new definition of "intimate partner" to state law, describing it as an individual who was in a romantic, dating, or sexual relationship with a person within the previous 12 months. The bill introduces new provisions making it a Class 1 misdemeanor for a person to purchase, possess, or transport a firearm after being convicted of assault and battery against an intimate partner, starting July 1, 2025. This means that if someone is convicted of domestic violence against an intimate partner, they would be prohibited from owning a firearm for three years following the conviction. The bill also expands the definition of "family or household member" to include individuals who have cohabitated within the previous 12 months. These changes are intended to provide additional legal protections for victims of domestic violence by restricting firearm access for perpetrators of such offenses, with the goal of reducing potential future violence.
