AI Summary
This bill establishes an Internet Safety Advisory Council (the Council) to promote safe media and technology use in Virginia's public schools. The Superintendent of Public Instruction will appoint up to 12 members, including representatives from various educational roles such as teachers, librarians, parents, school administrators, students, and Internet safety experts. The Council's primary responsibilities include developing and annually reviewing model policies and best practices for Internet safety, creating recommendations for instructional practices related to safe media and technology use, and maintaining a webpage on the Department of Education's website with resources and links to successful instructional practices. The Council is required to submit a report to the Board of Education and education committee chairs by October 31, 2025, detailing its progress in updating Internet safety materials. The bill's provisions will expire on July 1, 2026, and the Council is instructed to build upon and update existing materials from a previously established Internet Safety Advisory Council to maximize resources and avoid duplicative work. The overall goal is to support school boards in enhancing Internet safety for students and teachers across Virginia's public elementary and secondary schools.
