This bill expands the scope of purposes for which a county legislative body can establish fire protection districts in Indiana. Currently, fire protection districts can be created for fire protection and fire prevention. The bill adds two new potential purposes: first, the provision of emergency medical services, including basic and advanced life support, but only if no other local unit is already providing such services with public funds to the same area. Second, the prevention of hazards that could cause loss of life, injury, property damage, economic disruption, or environmental damage. The bill maintains existing provisions that allow fire protection districts to be established across one or more townships within a county, and allows for districts that include municipalities, provided the municipality consents or a majority of its freeholders petition for inclusion. The changes to the law will take effect retroactively on January 1, 2025, and the bill includes an emergency declaration, suggesting its immediate importance or urgency.
