This bill requires every county in Indiana to establish and maintain a Project Lifesaver program by January 1, 2026. Project Lifesaver is defined as a community-based, public safety nonprofit organization that provides resources to law enforcement, fire and rescue agencies, and caregivers to help protect and locate individuals with cognitive disorders who are prone to wandering. The county fiscal body must appropriate and approve necessary funding for implementing the program. The division of disability and rehabilitative services is tasked with ensuring county compliance and must report to the general assembly by March 1, 2026, regarding which counties have implemented the program. The division is also authorized to adopt rules to implement the program and may create additional guidelines through the standard rule-making process. The bill is set to take effect on July 1, 2025, giving counties time to develop and implement their local Project Lifesaver programs.
