AI Summary

This bill establishes new legal provisions regarding gratuities for public officials in Indiana, defining a gratuity as a payment made to a public servant after an official act as a reward or token of appreciation. The bill creates specific restrictions and penalties for offering or accepting such gratuities, making it a Class A misdemeanor to provide or solicit a gratuity intended to reward an official act, with the offense escalating to a Level 6 felony if the gratuity's fair market value is $750 or more. The law includes several important exemptions, such as goods or services subject to existing ethics rules, items valued under $100, ceremonial items like plaques or trophies, lawful political contributions, and work-related compensation from the governmental entity employing the public servant. Notably, the definition of "public servant" is expanded to include former public servants, and the law aims to prevent potential corruption by prohibiting rewards for official actions. The bill will take effect on July 1, 2025, and is designed to maintain the integrity of public service by creating clear guidelines and consequences for inappropriate financial interactions between individuals and public officials.
