This bill authorizes the creation of a distinctive license plate specifically for medical technologists in New York State. Medical technologists who want these special plates can request them by filing an application with the Department of Motor Vehicles, which will verify their professional status annually. The distinctive plates will feature "New York State" at the top and "Medical Technologist" at the bottom. To obtain these plates, applicants must pay the standard vehicle registration fee plus an additional $15 annual service charge. Before the plates can be produced, the bill requires either a $6,000 surety bond or a minimum of 200 pre-orders. If 200 or more plate sets are sold within two years of availability, the bond requirement will be discontinued. The additional service charges collected from these plates will be deposited into a special fund used for designing, producing, advertising, and distributing distinctive license plates. The bill will take effect 180 days after becoming law, allowing state agencies time to prepare for implementation.
