This bill requires the Department of Human Resource Management (DHRM) to establish a new State Government Internship Coordinator position aimed at attracting high-quality interns to state government service. The Coordinator will work to help interns develop skills that will support their ability to compete for positions in Commonwealth agencies after completing their internships and educational programs. Additionally, the bill mandates that DHRM collaborate with the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia to support, track, and promote internship opportunities at institutions of higher education. The bill also requires DHRM to create and administer a professional development system for state agency interns, their supervisors, and human resources staff, with the goal of supporting and improving internship programs across state government. This includes efforts to help agencies develop new and existing internship programs, promote these opportunities to potential interns, and educate supervisors and HR staff on implementing successful internship experiences. By establishing this formal infrastructure, the bill seeks to create more structured, supportive, and strategic internship opportunities that can potentially convert talented interns into future state government employees.
