This bill amends Kentucky law to require the Department for Community Based Services (DCBS) to develop and implement a one-hour dementia training course for its staff. The training will cover critical aspects of Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia, including warning signs, risk factors, disease stages, communication strategies, safety risks, and best practices for interacting with adults with dementia. All DCBS employees who provide supervisory or direct services at local, district, or state levels, as well as those contracted to provide adult protective services, will be required to complete this training either within six months of the Act's effective date or upon initial employment. Employees must also complete the training at least once every two years. This requirement builds upon existing training mandates for DCBS staff concerning domestic violence and elder abuse, and is designed to improve the understanding and care of adults with dementia within the state's social services system.
