This bill requires Indiana's Medicaid program to provide comprehensive coverage for obesity treatment, including prevention and wellness services, nutrition counseling, intensive behavioral therapy, bariatric surgery, and FDA-approved medications for chronic weight management. The bill mandates that medication coverage criteria cannot be more restrictive than the FDA's approved indications, and that Medicaid recipients will have unrestricted access to these medications. While the office (which includes the secretary of family and social services, managed care organizations, and their contractors) can still use utilization management to determine medical necessity, these determinations must be made consistently with how other medical conditions are evaluated. Additionally, the bill requires the office to provide written notice to Medicaid recipients, providers, and prescribers about these obesity treatment coverage details annually, beginning January 1, 2026. This legislation aims to improve access to obesity treatment by ensuring a range of medical interventions are covered under Medicaid.
