This bill adds a new section to Indiana's insurance code that protects certain Medicare supplement insurance applicants from discrimination when purchasing or switching policies. Specifically, the bill applies to two groups of applicants: (1) those who apply for a Medicare supplement policy within six months of turning 65 and enrolling in Medicare Part B, and (2) those who are at least 65 years old, currently have a Medicare supplement policy, and want to switch to a similar policy with a different insurance company within 60 days of their birthday. For these applicants, insurance companies are prohibited from denying coverage, conditioning the policy's effectiveness, or pricing the policy differently based on the applicant's health status, medical history, healthcare usage, or current medical condition. When an existing Medicare supplement policy holder switches to a new policy under these conditions, the new policy must take effect at least 30 days after the application is signed. The provisions of this bill will go into effect on January 1, 2026, and aim to provide more consistent and fair access to Medicare supplement insurance for older adults.
