This bill amends the New York State Education Law to enhance safety protocols for science laboratories in elementary and secondary schools. Specifically, the bill requires the Commissioner of Education to develop comprehensive procedures and guidelines for the safe operation and maintenance of school science laboratories. These guidelines must cover critical areas including classroom and laboratory inspections, proper maintenance and storage of safety equipment and scientific materials, safety and health training for school employees, and procedures for handling injuries or accidents. The bill also grants the Commissioner authority to direct schools to temporarily or permanently stop using materials, equipment, or conducting science demonstrations that are determined to pose an undue risk of harm to students, teachers, or staff. The procedures must align with existing federal and state safety regulations, with the ultimate goal of protecting the well-being of everyone in the school science laboratory environment. The act would take effect immediately upon passage.
