This bill requires school districts to provide water safety information to parents or guardians of students upon enrollment, starting in the 2026-2027 school year. The information, which will be developed by the commissioner of health in consultation with the education commissioner, must cover drowning prevention, water safety, and safe and healthy swimming practices. Parents can receive this information electronically or in paper form, and they can request translations into any of the twelve most common non-English languages spoken by limited-English proficient individuals in the state. For students 18 years or older, the information will be provided directly to the student. Each school district must also publish this water safety information on their website in a clearly visible and accessible location. The goal of this legislation is to improve awareness and education about water safety among students and their families, potentially reducing the risk of drowning and water-related accidents.
