This bill requires the New York State Department of Health to design a specialized autism training program for medical professionals, including primary care physicians, neurologists, psychiatrists, dentists, emergency room personnel, and other medical specialists. Following the implementation of this training, the department will establish a pilot program to create an "autism team" in hospitals, who can be called upon when a patient with autism enters the emergency room, needs tests or x-rays, or requires hospital admission. The autism team members will have completed the specialized training and will be equipped to advise physicians and hospital staff on how to effectively communicate with patients who have autism, taking into account the communication difficulties many individuals with autism experience. The bill aims to improve medical care and communication for patients with autism by providing targeted education and support within hospital settings. The act will take effect 90 days after becoming law, with immediate authorization for developing necessary rules and regulations.
