Bill Summary

AN ACT to amend the executive law, in relation to prohibiting discrimination in government procurement

AI Summary

This bill amends the New York State Executive Law to prohibit discrimination in government procurement by adding new language that makes it an unlawful discriminatory practice for state agencies and political subdivisions to deny contracting or procurement opportunities based on a person's actual or perceived race, creed, color, national origin, sexual orientation, military status, sex, age, disability, marital status, or familial status, as well as the characteristics of their business associates, partners, members, stockholders, directors, officers, managers, superintendents, agents, employees, suppliers, or customers. The bill preserves the ability of state and local governments to establish policies aimed at increasing participation by groups traditionally underrepresented in government contracting. This legislation is part of a broader effort to ensure equal opportunity and prevent discrimination in various aspects of public life, recognizing that discrimination not only threatens individual rights but also undermines the foundations of a free and democratic society. The amendment reinforces the state's commitment to creating an inclusive environment where every individual has a fair chance to participate fully in economic and public opportunities.
