This resolution commends Liam Hedley and Hunter Marcello, two eighth-grade students from Newfane Middle School, for receiving the Liberty Medal, which is the highest honor bestowed by the New York State Senate. On July 3, 2024, these young students demonstrated extraordinary heroism when they noticed a woman in distress in the water at the Town of Newfane Marina. They quickly acted by running to the nearby Hedley Boat Company, where they enlisted the help of Liam's father. Together, they launched a dinghy, rescued the woman, and brought her to shore where emergency medical personnel were waiting. The resolution highlights their courageous and selfless actions, praising them for demonstrating exceptional character and compassion by voluntarily responding to help someone in need without thought of personal risk or reward. Following their rescue, the students were honored by their school district and met with Superintendent Jay Lupini, who commended their bravery. The resolution formally recognizes their heroic efforts and will transmit a copy of the resolution to both Liam Hedley and Hunter Marcello as a formal acknowledgment of their remarkable act of rescue.
