AI Summary

This bill establishes comprehensive guidelines and requirements for artificial intelligence (AI) usage in Indiana's educational system. The Indiana Department of Education must create guidelines for school AI policies, develop a model policy, and compile an inventory of at least 20 AI platforms, classifying them as supported or discouraged for school use. The department will establish a process for teachers and administrators to submit AI platforms for the inventory and must conduct an annual survey of teachers and students regarding AI platform usage, effectiveness, and impact on learning. Schools and charter schools are required to adopt and publicly post AI policies that outline restrictions on AI platform use, approved platforms, reporting methods for improper AI use, and disclosure requirements for students. Importantly, the bill prohibits schools and school employees from penalizing students solely based on evidence from an AI detection tool. The department must also publish educational AI materials for students and parents and submit an annual report to the governor, legislative council, and AI task force. These provisions aim to provide guidance, transparency, and responsible management of AI technologies in educational settings, with the first implementation date set for July 1, 2025.
