This bill modifies the composition of the Mississippi Commission on College Accreditation (MCCA) to ensure more comprehensive representation across different educational sectors. Specifically, the bill expands the commission's membership from three to four additional members, representing public community colleges, universities, private colleges, and proprietary schools. The bill updates the selection process, with these additional members now chosen by the three permanently placed MCCA Commissioners (which include the Executive Director of the Mississippi Community College Board, the Commissioner of Higher Education, and the newly added Executive Director of the Mississippi Alliance of Independent Colleges and Universities). Each of these four additional members will serve three-year terms. The bill does not change the commission's core responsibilities, which include authorizing and maintaining an approved list of postsecondary academic degree-granting institutions in Mississippi, conducting site visits, and ensuring educational quality across different types of educational institutions. The changes are intended to broaden representation and ensure that all postsecondary educational sectors have a voice in the accreditation process. The bill will take effect on July 1, 2025.
