AI Summary

This bill establishes the Mississippi Delta Medical Apprenticeship Program (MS DMAP), a comprehensive initiative designed to create career pathways in healthcare for high school students in the Mississippi Delta region. Beginning in the 2025-2026 school year, the program will target public school students in grades 9-12 from 18 specific counties experiencing critical healthcare professional shortages. Eligible students must maintain a 2.25 GPA, have a consistent attendance record, display positive character, and express interest in healthcare careers. The apprenticeship will provide a full-year program of academic and practical instruction, including orientation, ACT preparation, hands-on medical activities, CPR certification, and interactions with licensed medical professionals. Students will participate in both traditional school year and summer programming, with instruction delivered by certified educators, postsecondary instructors, and healthcare professionals. Successful participants who enroll in a Mississippi public college and declare a health-related major will be eligible for at least a 30% tuition reduction. The program will be supported by a newly created trust fund that can receive grants and donations, and it aims to develop a healthcare professional pipeline by providing early exposure and training to students from underserved populations in the Mississippi Delta region.
