This bill requires the development of mandatory continuing education course materials for teachers focused on mental health issues, to be implemented during their five-year registration periods. These topics include continuing education courses, programs related to mental health, eating disorders, behavioral health disorders, strategies for improving learning environments, crisis de-escalation techniques, identifying early signs of mental illness, and utilizing evidence-based training programs like mental health first aid. Teachers will be required to complete at least 100 hours of continuing education, with mental health-related courses being included at least twice during each five-year registration period. The bill aims to enhance teachers' understanding and preparedness in addressing mental health issues among students, and the commissioner of education is authorized to develop necessary rules and regulations to implement these requirements. The act will take effect on the first day of January following its passage.
