Creates a process for a parent or community member to request that a governing body investigate instruction or discussion that the person believes is not aligned to shared principles.

AI Summary

This bill establishes new requirements for civics education in Indiana public schools, focusing on how certain subjects should be taught with specific ideological guidelines. It mandates that instruction in various sections of the state education code must incorporate universal principles from foundational U.S. documents like the Declaration of Independence, Bill of Rights, and Constitution. These principles include concepts such as limited government, separation of powers, checks and balances, and individual liberty. The bill requires schools to foster a national identity based on these shared principles while prohibiting instruction that emphasizes racial or gender identity, victimization, class struggle, or systemic exclusion. Additionally, the bill creates a mechanism allowing parents and community members to request investigations into instruction they believe does not align with these standards. If a parent or community member submits such a request and subsequently appeals the initial decision, the school's governing body must review the appeal at its next public hearing. Importantly, the bill stipulates that a teacher or principal's failure to comply with these requirements can be considered misconduct in office, potentially leading to professional consequences.
