This bill amends the New York State Education Law to specify the methods and devices that can be used for vision screening examinations for students. Currently, students must be tested for color perception, distance acuity, and near vision within six months of school admission, and the bill expands the allowable testing methods to explicitly include the Snellen Eye Test Chart (a standard eye chart with progressively smaller letters used to measure visual acuity) and automated vision screening devices. The bill requires that the results of these vision screenings be documented in writing, made available to the student's parent or guardian and their teacher, and permanently kept in the student's school file for the minimum retention period prescribed by the commissioner.
