AI Summary

This bill requires the Mississippi Department of Corrections to convert three existing restitution centers (located in Madison County, Flowood, and Pascagoula) into post-release reentry centers designed to help recently released individuals successfully transition back into society. Individuals eligible for release, including those on parole or early release supervision, can stay at these centers for up to 90 days or until alternative housing is found, with participation being voluntary and not a condition of release. The Department of Corrections will be responsible for developing comprehensive support services at these centers, including assistance with obtaining counseling, housing, job training, driver's licenses, healthcare, education, cognitive behavioral programs, drug and alcohol treatment, and other community support services. The bill also modifies existing state law to exempt these post-release reentry centers from standard residence restrictions typically applied to certain offenders, allowing more flexibility in their location. The goal is to provide a structured, supportive environment that helps individuals successfully reintegrate into their communities by addressing practical needs and providing resources that can reduce the likelihood of recidivism. The new centers are set to become operational on July 1, 2025.
