Provides that an automated tractor-trailer operated in Indiana must meet federal motor vehicle standards and regulations.

AI Summary

This bill establishes regulations for automated tractor-trailers (self-driving trucks) in Indiana, effective July 1, 2025. The legislation defines an automated tractor-trailer as a truck towing a trailer where at least one safety-critical control function occurs without direct human input, and defines a "human tractor-trailer operator" as an individual who meets all state and federal qualifications to operate such a vehicle. The bill mandates that any automated tractor-trailer operated in Indiana must comply with federal motor vehicle standards and regulations, and critically, requires that a qualified human operator must be physically present inside the vehicle at all times. This human operator must continuously monitor the vehicle's performance and be prepared to take manual control of the truck's driving tasks if necessary. The requirements are designed to ensure safety by maintaining human oversight and intervention capability during autonomous truck operation, while also providing a clear legal framework for the emerging technology of self-driving commercial vehicles.
