Bill Summary

Coverage of prescription pain medications. Provides that the office of the secretary of family and social services may not place greater coverage restrictions on a non-opioid drug prescribed for the treatment or management of pain than the coverage restrictions placed on an opioid drug prescribed to treat or manage pain with respect to the Medicaid program or the children's health insurance program. Provides that a policy of accident and sickness insurance and a health maintenance organization contract may not place greater coverage restrictions on a non-opioid drug prescribed for the treatment or management of pain than the coverage restrictions placed on an opioid drug prescribed to treat or manage pain.

AI Summary

This bill aims to ensure equal coverage for non-opioid pain medications across different healthcare programs in Indiana, effective July 1, 2025. Specifically, the bill defines a "non-opioid drug" as a medication that does not act on opioid receptors and has been approved by the Federal Food and Drug Administration. The legislation applies to the Medicaid program, children's health insurance program, accident and sickness insurance policies, and health maintenance organization contracts. Under the bill, these entities are prohibited from imposing stricter coverage restrictions on non-opioid pain medications compared to the coverage restrictions for opioid pain medications. This means that if an opioid pain medication is covered with certain terms or conditions, a comparable non-opioid pain medication must receive the same level of coverage. The goal appears to be providing patients and healthcare providers with more flexible and equitable options for pain management, potentially reducing barriers to accessing alternative pain treatment methods that do not involve opioids.
