AI Summary

This bill modifies the structure and responsibilities of Indiana's Semiquincentennial Commission, which is preparing for the 250th anniversary of the United States in 2026. The bill changes the commission's membership, transitioning from a large, diverse group to a more streamlined body led by the director of the department of natural resources starting June 1, 2025. It also establishes a new Semiquincentennial Advisory Committee to provide guidance, and designates Indiana's United States Senators as honorary, non-voting co-chairpersons. The commission's core duties are now focused on planning and conducting at least one commemorative event in each Indiana state park before June 30, 2027, and promoting programs across state agencies, municipalities, schools, and universities that celebrate the semiquincentennial. The bill appropriates $2 million to the department of natural resources to support these efforts and extends the commission's legal authorization until July 1, 2027. Members of the commission and advisory committee will be eligible for travel expense reimbursement, and the department of natural resources will provide staff support, consulting with organizations like the Sagamore Institute and Indiana Historical Society to develop programming and educational materials.
