This bill amends Mississippi Code Section 85-7-107 to provide mechanics with an additional legal remedy when a vehicle owner fails to pay for repairs. Currently, mechanics can retain possession of a vehicle and pursue legal action to recover repair costs. The new provision specifically allows a mechanic to seek vehicle title from a title loan company if the vehicle owner obtained a title loan after the repair work began and subsequently failed to pay for the services. This means that if a vehicle owner takes out a title loan on a vehicle while still owing money for repairs, the mechanic can now directly pursue the title through legal channels against the title loan company. The bill will go into effect on July 1, 2025, giving businesses and financial institutions time to prepare for the new legal mechanism. This change aims to provide mechanics with more protection and a clearer path to recovering costs when vehicle owners default on repair payments, particularly in situations involving title loans.
