This bill modifies the existing law regarding physical examinations for public middle and high school students participating in interscholastic athletics. The bill introduces a standardized "Preparticipation Physical Evaluation form" developed collaboratively by six major medical sports organizations, which will now be the required documentation for athletic participation. Students will be prohibited from trying out for or participating in interscholastic athletic teams unless they submit a signed form from a licensed physician, advanced practice registered nurse, or physician assistant, certifying they have received a physical examination and are physically fit for athletic competition. Importantly, the bill extends the validity of these physical examinations from 12 to 14 calendar months, providing more flexibility for students. Additionally, the bill mandates that public schools cannot become members of interscholastic athletic organizations that do not recognize this 14-month physical examination standard, thereby ensuring consistent implementation of the new requirements across different athletic governing bodies.
