This joint resolution proposes an amendment to the Oregon Constitution that modifies the recall election process for public officials. Currently, when a recall petition is filed against an elected official, a special election must be held within 35 days. The proposed amendment changes this by requiring the recall measure to be placed on the ballot at the next regularly scheduled election in the official's electoral district. If the petition is certified after the election filing deadline, the recall measure will be placed on the ballot for the following regularly scheduled election. The resolution maintains existing provisions that allow a recall petition to be filed after an official has held office for six months (with exceptions for legislators), and requires the petition to include reasons for the recall. The official targeted by the recall can provide a 200-word justification, continues to perform their duties until the election results are officially declared, and can choose to resign within five days of the petition's filing. The amendment will be submitted to Oregon voters for approval at the next regular general election.
