This bill requires all new clothes washers sold in Oregon starting January 1, 2030, to include a microfiber filtration system, which is defined as a filter with a mesh size of 100 micrometers or less that operates during all washing cycles. The filtration system can either be built directly into the washing machine or provided as an in-line system that can be installed with a new washer. Manufacturers must also attach a conspicuous label to these washers that informs consumers about the microfiber filtration system and provides instructions for regularly checking the filter and disposing of captured lint with household solid waste. The bill gives the Department of Environmental Quality and Environmental Quality Commission the authority to prepare for implementing these requirements before the 2030 operative date. The goal of this legislation appears to be reducing microfiber pollution by capturing small fibers that are typically released during clothes washing and can enter waterways and environmental systems.
