This bill requires physicians and physician associates licensed by the Oregon Medical Board (OMB) to complete two hours of continuing education every six years focused on suicide risk assessment, treatment, management, and specifically including lethal means counseling. Lethal means counseling involves strategies to reduce access to potentially deadly methods of self-harm, such as firearms or medications, for individuals at risk of suicide. The bill mandates that licensees report their completion of this specialized training to the board and that the board document and track this education. The board will remove personally identifiable information from the data, except for physicians and physician associates who consent to share their information with the Oregon Health Authority. The continuing education requirements will apply to all physician and physician associate licenses issued or renewed on or after the effective date of the act in 2025, ensuring that healthcare professionals are equipped with critical skills to identify and mitigate suicide risks in their patient populations.
