This bill amends Oregon Revised Statutes (ORS) 561.070 to require the Director of Agriculture to hire a new position called an organic policy special assistant. The special assistant will have six primary responsibilities: tracking national trends and regulatory changes affecting organic agricultural products, supporting organic agricultural product marketing, facilitating trade in organic agricultural products (especially with countries that primarily produce organic goods), addressing data gaps related to organic products in consultation with other state agencies, establishing and supporting statewide infrastructure for post-harvest handling and processing of organic agricultural products, and integrating organic practice policies across all relevant department programs. This new role appears designed to provide focused attention and strategic support for Oregon's organic agricultural sector, helping the state's agricultural department stay informed about and responsive to developments in organic farming and production.
