This bill amends the Illinois Vehicle Code to allow volunteer firefighters and volunteer EMS providers to use red or white, or blue oscillating, rotating, or flashing lights on their personal vehicles, but only when responding to an emergency call or when parked at the scene of an emergency or while providing motor vehicle assistance. The bill also permits vehicles operated by volunteer firefighters and volunteer EMS providers to be equipped with a siren, whistle, or bell, which can only be used when responding to an emergency call. These changes expand the existing regulations around emergency vehicle lighting and sound devices, providing additional flexibility for volunteer emergency responders to signal their status and respond quickly to urgent situations. The modifications aim to support volunteer emergency service providers by allowing them to more clearly indicate their role and purpose when assisting in critical situations, while still maintaining restrictions to prevent misuse of emergency vehicle signals.
