This bill amends Tennessee's state natural areas law by updating the descriptions and acreage of several existing natural areas and designating four new state natural areas. Specifically, the bill increases the acreage of an existing natural area from 16.5 to 41 acres, expands the size of several other natural areas like Barnett's Woods (from 40 to 156 acres) and other sites with varying acreage increases ranging from 14 to 600 acres. The bill also adds four new natural areas: Clifty Creek Gorge in Morgan County (89 acres) which protects a federally threatened plant species; Rocky Hill in Rutherford County (1 acre) protecting an endangered clover species; Union Grove in Hamblen County (59 acres) preserving forest and a state endangered trillium species; and Versailles Knob in Rutherford County (40 acres) protecting a federally endangered plant and its limestone habitat. These changes demonstrate Tennessee's ongoing efforts to preserve and expand protection for unique natural landscapes and endangered species through its state natural areas program. The bill takes effect immediately upon becoming law.
