This bill modifies Chapter 93 of the general statutes to require registrars of vital statistics to issue two types of death certificates: standard death certificates and short form death certificates. The standard and short form certificates will both contain key identifying information about the deceased, including their name, date of death, town of death, date of birth, and Social Security number. However, access to the short form death certificate, which includes the Social Security number, is restricted to only the surviving spouse or next of kin. This change aims to provide a more standardized approach to documenting and accessing death records while also protecting the sensitive personal information of the deceased by limiting who can obtain the version of the certificate that contains the full Social Security number.
