This bill expands the definition of "police officer" for the purposes of various benefits and legal protections in Nevada. The expanded definition now includes school police officers, juvenile probation officers, bailiffs and deputy marshals of municipal courts, marshals and deputy marshals of cities and towns, and all category I, II, and III peace officers. As a result, these newly included professionals will now be eligible for several key benefits previously reserved for other law enforcement personnel, such as industrial insurance coverage, exemption from jury service, compensation for temporary disabilities, and group insurance benefits for surviving spouses and children. Additionally, the bill includes an appropriation of $3,235 for fiscal year 2025-2026 and $8,129 for fiscal year 2026-2027 to the Department of Public Safety to cover the cost of annual physical examinations for the Chief Parole and Probation Officer and Capitol Police Division officers. The bill will take effect in stages, with some provisions becoming effective on July 1, 2025, and others on July 1, 2026.
