This bill expands the list of medical professionals who are eligible to serve as a county medical examiner in Iowa. Currently, only licensed physicians and osteopathic physicians could be appointed to this role. The bill adds advanced registered nurse practitioners (ARNPs) and physician assistants (PAs) to the pool of potential county medical examiners. The appointment process remains the same, with candidates being selected from lists submitted by medical societies or, if no names are provided, directly appointed by the county board of supervisors. If a medical examiner from the county is unavailable or unable to serve, the board can now also appoint an ARNP or PA from the same or another county to temporarily fill the role. This change broadens the potential candidates for this important public health position, potentially addressing physician shortages in rural or underserved areas by allowing more types of licensed medical professionals to serve in this capacity.
