This bill requires the Long Island Rail Road, Metro-North Commuter Railroad, and New York City Transit Authority to establish a no-fare transportation program for certain active duty, uniformed police officers within the metropolitan commuter transportation district. Specifically, the bill modifies existing law to expand the no-fare program to include trained and sworn police officers as defined in the criminal procedure law who are employed in good standing with active law enforcement responsibilities. The program includes several administrative requirements, such as mandatory registration by officers, annual re-registration, disclosure of regular working hours and expected train routes, and the requirement to present law enforcement identification when using the no-fare transit pass. The bill aims to increase protection and improve safety for transit customers and employees by facilitating free transportation for law enforcement personnel. The program does not limit the transit authority's ability to provide additional no-fare transportation to other police officers employed by the city of New York or by the transit authority itself. The bill will take effect 30 days after becoming law.
