AI Summary

This bill amends Georgia's laws regarding compensation for private attorneys who are appointed to temporarily serve as district attorneys when the regular district attorney is absent or disqualified. Under the new provisions, such private attorneys will now receive compensation of $250 per hour for certified hours worked, up to a maximum of 90% of the monthly salary of the district attorney they are replacing (excluding any supplemental pay). These attorneys can also hire additional staff like private counsel, paralegals, and legal clerks, who can be paid up to $110 per hour. The compensation will be paid from state funds appropriated for the district attorney's office, and actual expenses will be reimbursed by the county at the same rate as regular district attorneys. The hourly rates will be automatically adjusted annually based on the Consumer Price Index to account for inflation. The bill aims to provide a more standardized and transparent compensation system for temporary district attorneys, ensuring they are fairly compensated for their work while maintaining financial accountability. The changes will go into effect on July 1, 2025.
