AI Summary

This bill requires local school boards in Mississippi to provide Mental Health First Aid training to all licensed and non-licensed instructional personnel, licensed administrators, and school resource officers (SROs) before the 2025-2026 school year. The training must be evidence-based and approved by the Department of Mental Health, and each school board must develop a policy determining the frequency of the training. The Department of Mental Health will provide participants with a certificate of completion, which can be used to satisfy training requirements for the current or future school districts. The bill mandates that this training will be a component of initial law enforcement training for SROs and their ongoing professional development. This requirement aims to enhance mental health awareness and support among school staff and law enforcement personnel working in educational settings, potentially improving early detection and response to mental health issues among students. The training will become effective from July 1, 2025, giving schools and local law enforcement agencies time to prepare and implement the new training requirements.
